The sardine run occurs from May through to July when billions of sardines – or more specifically the Southern African pilchard – spawn in the cool waters of the Agulhas Bank and move northward along the east coast of South Africa. Their sheer numbers create a feeding frenzy along the coastline. The run, containing millions of individual sardines, occurs when a current of cold water heads north from the Agulhas Bank up to Mozambique where it then leaves the coastline and goes further east into the Indian Ocean.

Want to do something other than the beach while on holiday? Once inside the KwaXolo Caves, visitors are taken on a journey back in time as they view the ancient San rock art that depicts the area’s rich cultural heritage.

Dating back some 100 000 years, the KwaXolo Caves, located inland of Margate on the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) South Coast, were once open-rock shelters for indigenous San communities, with the history of these people echoed in the rock paintings evident today.

Set atop the precipice of a deep gorge and boasting some of the region’s most magnificent views, these once-inaccessible caves are now a top tourist attraction following the launch of the KwaXolo Caves Adventures earlier this year.

“The area is renowned for its coastal activities but there are so many exciting tourism developments within the hinterland region,” said CEO of Ugu South Coast Tourism (USCT), Phelisa Mangcu.

“We believe local tourism opportunities must be inclusive of all communities, and the establishment of the exciting and innovative KwaXolo Caves Adventures is just that. This is a fantastic fusion of cultural, natural and extreme sports tourism that gives visitors a unique experience of the KZN South Coast while empowering the surrounding communities.”

The caves are now accessible through the erection of a Ferrata system, which is a climbing route using steel cables and rungs fixed to rocks. Visitors are kitted out in safety gear and securely hooked to the cables, allowing them to walk safely along the precarious mountain path. This system of harnesses and a 300-metre cableway was designed by the same engineers tasked with creating the famous Wild Swing at Oribi Gorge – another popular tourist attraction on the KZN South Coast.

Led by experienced tour guides, visitors are taken along this incredible mountainside, attached by two safety lines on a fixed cable. These are then moved along as the hike extends towards the KwaXolo Caves, with expansive views of the waterfall and endless gorge providing a captivating backdrop.

Once inside the KwaXolo Caves, visitors are taken on a journey back in time as they view the ancient San rock art that depicts the area’s rich cultural heritage. Similar to rock paintings found in mountainous regions throughout the province, the sites are believed to have had a particular natural, cultural and spiritual significance to the San people. The paintings are said to represent the journeys of shamans (medicine men) into the spiritual world in an effort to induce rain, heal sicknesses and ease societal tensions.

“The KwaXolo Caves have been distinguished as being of extraordinary significance in terms of the South African Heritage Resources Act, and we believe this particular hiking experience is incredibly unique,” said operator, Shaun Makhanya.

“In addition to the benefits of visiting tourists, the experience offers a number of benefits for the local KwaXolo and Dumezulu communities, including employment opportunities and community development initiatives. Among these are entrepreneurial and skills workshops that will be hosted as soon as regulations allow. The increased tourism activity will also result in infrastructure development and maintenance, to the benefit of all.”

Originally launched in March this year, KwaXolo Caves Adventures was halted during the Covid-19 lockdown, but with new Level 3 regulations, the business is operational for day visitors. This is the ideal picnic spot for those looking to enjoy the fantastic scenery, but visitors are encouraged to bring their own picnics.

The activity is open to hikers aged 8 years and older and will take between one and one-and-a-half hours to complete. You can make and enjoy it at home to keep your craving at bay! Or at least until you can enjoy a holiday on the KZN South Coast, AKA the home of the best curries in the country!

While holidaying, what is your favourite curry to enjoy: Beef, lamb, chicken, crab, prawn or ALL OF THE ABOVE!

Traditional Mutton Curry (+- 1 hour to prepare. Serves 6)

Ingredients:

1 kg lamb/chicken (cut into bite-sized pieces)
2 large onions (finely sliced)
2 cinnamon sticks
2 bay leaves
1 tomato (chopped into small cubes or grated)
1 sachet of tomato paste
¼ cup cooking oil
3 – 4 medium-sized curry (UTD) potatoes
1 tsp ginger/garlic paste
1 ½ teaspoon rough salt or salt to taste
1 ½ to 2 teaspoons chilli powder (or more)
2 teaspoons curry powder (add more if you prefer a stronger/pungent curry)
1 teaspoon dhania/jeera powder
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
2 green chillies (slit)
1 sprig of curry leaves
¼ bunch chopped dhania (to garnish)

METHOD:

• Braise onion in oil until golden brown. Add ginger/garlic paste. Stir and then add washed and drained meat.  Add masalas (chilli powder, curry powder, dhania /jeera powder and turmeric powder).  Toss until meat is well coated.
• Add salt and allow the masala to ‘fry’ on low heat for at least 10 minutes, tossing at intervals until it starts to catch at the bottom of the pot.
• Add tomatoes and tomato paste and allow to cook until tomatoes are softened. Then add potatoes and a bit of water (1/2 cup or more) and allow to cook on medium to low heat until potatoes are cooked and starting to ‘crack’ up in a curry.
• DO NOT STIR during the cooking process as the potatoes will break up.  Rather lift the pot and gently shake.  Garnish with curry leaves and chopped dhania.  If too thick, add a little water and gently shake the pot. Serve with roti, rice or as a bunny chow in bread.

TIPS:

• Use meat on the bone, rather than boneless meat as the taste of meat on the bone far outdoes that of boneless meat.
• Use UTD (up to date or gravy soakers) potatoes.  Best for any curry.
• Eshana usually grinds her own dhania /jeera powder as she says it tastes much nicer than the ready ground store-bought pack.  She roasts 2 parts dhania seeds and 1 part jeera seeds in a frying pan (separately).  Leave to cool and then grind in a coffee/masala grinder. You can grind enough for a week or a month and keep it in a dry, sealed container.
• The same applies to ginger/garlic paste.  She grinds 2 parts ginger to 1 part garlic. Her recipe: 2kg’s ginger to 1kg garlic, 5 – 6 green chillies, 3 – 4 sprigs curry leaves, and 1 teaspoon turmeric powder.  Grind in a food processor or liquidiser (with a little water).  Keep refrigerated in a sealed container (2 months).  Keeps for up to 6 months in a freezer.
• To get a really nice, thick gravy she suggests you use a sachet of tomato paste instead of the chopped fresh tomatoes.  It is especially nice if you use a sachet of tomato paste together with 1 fresh chopped tomato.
